Teeth Whitening Treatment – what’s your motivation?

We spoke to Andy Parkin, a patient at our Monton Practice about why he’s considering a whitening treatment.

Firstly, we asked him if he had been prompted by a specific incident.

No, it was a combination of reasons. Firstly, my wife Nina has had her teeth whitened and they look good. On our wedding pictures, there is a noticeable difference between the shades of white. It’s obvious that all the tea and red wine etc. that I drink, has stained my teeth and I know I can do something about it.

Secondly, it’s probably an age issue. I cannot stop the inevitable ageing process, as it’s out of my control, but teeth whitening can make you look a little more youthful, so why not give it a go!

There is also a confidence thing. I think if you know you have nice white teeth you are more likely to smile and engage with people.

We asked Andy if he had used a whitening treatment before?

Yes, I’ve used a whitening kit and a range of the whitening toothpastes you can buy from the chemist, or supermarket. The kit had some impact, but I think the ‘over the counter’ treatments are a waste of time. On this occasion, I’m working with a qualified dental professional. So, I’m looking for a significant difference in shading, to the point where I want family and friends to notice and be commenting on the treatment.

So, is Andy conscious of the appearance of his teeth in general?

No, not really. Only when it’s brought to my attention or if I’m around people with really white teeth!

Will you be telling anyone that you are having the teeth whitening treatment?

No – I want to see if they notice the difference! Oh and I’ll have to tell the Mrs (you have to tell them everything!!) ·

We wondered if Andy saw age or gender as an issue around having a teeth whitening treatment?

Yes, I think more women than men have it done. I believe it’s more acceptable for women to have this treatment than it is for men. Very few of my male colleagues, friends or family have had teeth whitening. I just don’t think it’s the ‘done thing’. But I think it will catch on, in the way male moisturizing products have. So long as the end results don’t look too ‘bling’ I think I will escape any ridicule! I’m hoping to get some positive comments and feedback!

Good luck with the treatment Andy – perhaps we can have before and after treatment photographs when it’s completed?
