Veneers are a popular way to improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. We will precisely match the shade of porcelain to improve a single discoloured tooth or lighten the front teeth.
A veneer makes a chipped tooth look intact again. The porcelain covers the whole of the front of the tooth with a thicker section replacing the broken part. Veneers are used to close small gaps when orthodontics (braces) are not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer brings it into line with the others.
The veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth. Just like a false fingernail fits over a nail, a veneer gives a natural and healthy look. For a precise match, a natural colour ‘composite’ material is used instead of porcelain.
Veneers are very thin and held in place by a special strong bond, so very little preparation is needed. Some types of veneer don’t need any bond at all.
Fitting a veneer takes two visits to the dentist. First the tooth is prepared and the shade is matched. The second visit is for the fitting. With so little preparation, you are unlikely to need a temporary veneer. Your tooth will look the same, but feel slightly less smooth. Before bonding it in place, your dentist will show you the veneer on your tooth to make sure you’re happy with it.
Veneers last for many years, but they can chip or break just like your own teeth. Your dentist will tell you how long each individual veneer should last. Small chips can be repaired, or a new veneer fitted if necessary.
