Teeth Whitening Treatment – General Dental Council Gets Tough

A former dental technician who carried out illegal teeth whitening treatment is facing jail. He has been handed Britain’s first dentistry related criminal behaviour order. According to the story in the Daily Mirror, he faces jail if he is caught whitening patients’ teeth again.

Jeffrey Lehmann, 54, was given the criminal behaviour order in a landmark case. After being struck off five years ago, he went on to offer lucrative teeth whitening treatments. The General Dental Council, which regulates the dental industry have launched an investigation following a complaint about him. Furthermore, they made the legal position clear. Only dentists who are properly qualified can carry out teeth whitening treatment.

Mr Lehmann was sentenced at Ealing Magistrates Court in July. And the judge was damning. “You do not have the qualifications or registration with the GDC and I’m quite certain that places members of the public at risk”. Lehmann was told to pay fines and costs amounting to £10,323.

Shaun Round from the GDC said “this outcome shows how seriously both the GDC and the Courts take the illegal practice of dentistry.
